How do INTJs approach politics? Have there ever been any INTJ presidents or politicians? Those are some great questions. In this article (and video), I’ll explore INTJs in politics, tell you where most INTJs seem to stand politically, and I’ll give you my take on politics.
Here are some presidents who were likely INTJ (some may have been ISTJ):
- Thomas Jefferson– Some suggest that Jefferson was an INFJ. However, he was an extreme skeptic who actually cut parts out of the Bible that he found unbelievable That sounds more like an NT skeptic thing.
- Calvin Coolidge
- Woodrow Wilson (INTJ/ISTJ)
- Chester A. Arthur
- Dwight D. Eisenhower (ISTJ or INTJ)
- James K. Polk
- John Adams
- Richard Nixon (ISTJ or INTJ)
Interestingly, when you search “INTJ presidents” on Google, it automatically displays the images of some INTJ presidents. It didn’t do that for other MBTI types. I wonder if an INTJ arranged that?
- Arnold Schwarzenegger was the Governator (governor of California). Most people type him as an INTJ (I wonder sometimes if he’s an ENTJ, but I usually consider him to be an INTJ of a different Enneagram type).
- Vladimir Putin is an INTJ, and a pretty strategic guy.
- Colin Powell
- Vladimir Lenin –A communist and typical INTJ propagandist (we’re apparently good at that).
- Hillary Clinton (ESTJ, ISTJ, INTJ)–It’s hard to determine her type for sure, because everything she does is so fake and scripted. She definitely gives off an introverted vibe for me. She’s definitely a thinker, and I get Fi instead of Fe in her upper four stack (in my opinion). Probably INTJ or ISTJ, but again, it’s hard to say for sure without being around her in her natural setting. She once respond to a question on whether she was introverted or extroverted, but she gave a nonsensical, politically correct answer by saying that she was an “extro-introvert.” Yeah, right.
As far as Donald Trump is concerned, most MBTI people agree that Trump is a textbook ESTP. I agree. I’m reading his book Trump: The Art of the Deal, and he is definitely an ESTP. He never plans, is very spontaneous, lives in the moment, is extroverted, and a thinker type.
INTJ Political Advantages and Disadvantages
When an INTJ enters politics, he or she will have the obvious advantage of long-range planning abilities, seeing the big picture, creating contingencies for multiple scenarios, and so forth.
The main disadvantage for the INTJ politician will be the exhaustion from social networking, public speaking, political correctness, and campaigning. I’m not sure if I could ever break through those disadvantages, but I’m sure some could (and have).
INTJ Political Affiliation
Are INTJs Republicans or Democrats? Are they conservatives or liberals? Just like with religion, you can’t determine a person’s political beliefs based on personality type alone. INTJs are all over the map when it comes to their political ideologies. You’ll find INTJs who are extreme left-wing liberals or Democrats; you’ll find INTJs who are extreme right-wing conservatives or Republicans; and you’ll find INTJs who are independents, apolitical, Libertarian, socialists, or whatever.
In fact, I’ve had all of those different types leave comments on my INTJ YouTube channel. One INTJ female left a comment a few months ago indicating that she prefers to use online dating sites so that she can avoid meeting guys who are a waste of time, such as Trump supporters. A few days later, another INTJ female left a comment indicating that she’s a conservative and staunch second amendment defender (gun rights). Some INTJs hate communism or socialism (INTJ female Ayn Rand comes to mind), whereas others support it. After all, Lenin and Marx were both INTJs, and they were communists.
I’ve viewed several threads on MBTI forums, Reddit, and other random articles in relation to politics and INTJs. The pattern that I observed based on those sources was that most INTJs lean toward conservative, Libertarian, or independent ideologies, whereas the minority seemed to be liberals or Democrats. Conservatives seemed to outpace most independents or Libertarians, but they were about split.
Furthermore, I discovered two interesting surveys concerning MBTI and political leanings. On personalitypage.com, 48% of the INTJs leaned most toward conservative, independent, or Libertarian platforms, whereas only 15% were Democrats or liberals. The majority were Republicans (33%). The rest were “not political, middle of the road, or other.”
In another survey published on politicaltypes.com, 81% of INTJs were either Republican (41%) or Independents (40%). Only 19% were Democrats.
It makes sense that most INTJs lean toward conservative or independent platforms (Libertarian, Republican, or Independent), because most of those platforms believe in small government, low taxes, low regulation, and capitalism—something that most INTJs prefer due to their fierce love of independence and autonomy.
However, as I stated before, type does not dictate political beliefs. You’ll find INTJs affiliated with virtually any and every political platform. Furthermore, if you look at the numbers on PoliticalTypes.com (link above), the INF “idealists” were the ones most identified as Democrats, especially the INFJ. I guess that makes sense given the fact that the idealists (NFs) often latch on to some political ideal such as ending poverty, creating world peace, or saving the whales.
My Political Views
What are my political beliefs as an INTJ? I grew up in a household with a (mostly) single mother who is not a political person to this day. She usually votes Democrat (and despite my best efforts, voted for Hillary), but that’s as political as she gets. She is not involved with politics whatsoever. When I cast my first ballot after turning 18 years old, I voted for John Kerry, a Democrat.
It wasn’t until a few years later that I learned more about politics, and I developed staunch conservative beliefs. I believe in small and limited government, capitalism, low taxation and regulation, gun rights, pro-Israel, pro free speech, the right to private property, religious freedom, pro-life, anti-drugs, capital punishment for major crimes, etc.
I’m strongly against any forms of communism, socialism, globalism, or liberalism.
Hence, I voted for Trump.
Don’t get me wrong—I certainly don’t condone things that Trump has said or done in his past. His tongue has been both an asset and a liability during his campaign. He has said some things that have made me laugh, and some things that have made me cringe. But Hillary and Bill Clinton are far worse, and far more corrupt. I think that Hillary Clinton is literally one of the most corrupt politicians in recent history. I was astonished by the level of corruption in the DNC, as revealed by WikiLeaks.
People just don’t understand how corrupt she really is, because all day long the general population is being saturated with propaganda from the media (like CNN-the Communist News Network), from liberal talk show hosts, etc. I’m not saying that Trump is a saint, but he was the better choice.
Conclusion: INTJs and Politics
In conclusion, INTJs are all over the map politically. You’ll find INTJs affiliated with every major political persuasion. Many tend toward conservative, independent, or Libertarian platforms, whereas the minority seem to fall in the Democrat, liberalism, communism, or socialism camp.
What about you? I’d love to hear where you stand politically as an INTJ (or even other types)! Did you vote in the 2016 election? Are you a Republican, Libertarian, or Democrat? Are you communist or Tea Party fanatic? Are you distraught that Trump won, or are you ecstatic? Feel free to leave a comment on the video sharing your political beliefs.
